iPod Software and Hacks

While Apple is very tight-lipped about its iPod software, most reports have the iPod 5G runs on the Pixo OS 2.1 operating system along with PortalPlayer's Digital Media Platform. The PortalPlayer platform is an all-in-one "system on a chip" that provides some of the hardware we already looked at, including the two ARM7TDMI microprocessor cores. The developer package includes audio-decoder support, customizable firmware (with support for DRM-system development) and software-development tools. The iPod user-interface is reportedly based on the Pixo Toolbox software that was available when Apple was creating the device (Pixo is now part of Sun Microsystems).

First Look: Apple's Dazzling iPod Nano

What you notice first about the iPod Nano, of course, is its size. It's tiny, sure, but that isn't all that unusual for flash memory players. What's really impressive about the Nano--and a real breakthrough for a lilliputian MP3 player--is its screen, a bright, crisp color display that makes navigating your tunes a breeze.

Apple iPod Nano third-generation

Review Earlier this month, Apple announced the newest embodiments of various iPod lines. The new iPod, the Classic, doesn't look substantially different from its predecessor. The new Nano, which supersedes the second generation product is - on the other hand - a complete revamp. What you'll notice straight away is its shape: it's a little shorter and much wider than its predecessor. Both the 4GB and 8GB configurations are identical in terms of dimensions - 6.9 x 5.2 x 0.7cm - so it is thinner than the older model, but at 49.2g, weighs a fraction more.

Introducing iPhone

iPhone combines three amazing products-a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod and a breakthrough Internet device-into one small, lightweight, handheld device with the best email ever on a mobile phone, full-screen web browsing, multi-touch screen, and applications such as Google Maps. And thanks to the latest software update (v1.1.3), you can now customize up to 9 home screen pages any way you like.

The Apple iPhone

Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate.

iPhone Accessibility Features

iPhone makes it easy to view your content up close. Its 3.5-inch high-resolution display and software-based interface allow you to zoom in on web pages, email, attachments, Google Maps, and photos.
